He is recognised for his work with artists like Justin Bieber, Usher, Jason Derulo, Little Mix, Trey Songz, Cee Lo Green, Martin Garrix & Paul Oakenfold amongst others, and his output has amassed over 5 million sales worldwide. His track ‘Take You’ was featured on Justin Bieber’s 2012 album Believe, which reached No.1 in 16 countries, including the US and the UK.
In 2011 James was offered a publishing deal with Universal Music Group at the age of 22. Since, he has cemented his position in the American music scene as one of the most influential young writers at this time; in 2013 he was awarded the coveted Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Contemporary music, awarded to foreign-born artists who have shown creative promise. James cites Dianne Warren, David Foster, Rodney ‘Dark Child’ Jerkins, Brandy and Dallas Austin as major influences on his music.
Recently Brett has worked with artists such as Becky G, Hot Chelle Rae, Jojo, Troye Sivan, Darren Criss and many more. Aside from writing full-time, Brett also teaches college courses on Popular Songwriting and Artist Development at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood, California.
These classes are based on curriculum that Brett not only teaches but wrote specifically for Musicians Institute. Brett earned his Bachelors in Vocal Performance and Music Business at Belmont University in Nashville, TN.
He started having commercial success as a writer and producer overseas in 2012 writing and producing songs for Winds, Diachi Mura, and TVXQ as well as his first Gold record for Ivy Quainoo for her second single “you got me”.
He currently lives in L.A. and is executive producing the debut album for After Romeo (Sony) as well as writing for various international and domestic acts.
